Abstract
Article examines the frontier marshal Joe Lefors and his early life and career, as well as his famous encounters with the outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Lefors career is a microcosm of the difficulties for establishing law and order in the American West. The author examines Lefor’s own memoirs as well as critics of Lefor’s own accounts and modern cinematic portrayals of Lefors.
