Information for Reviewers
Journal of the West relies on the expertise and integrity of peer reviewers to maintain the quality and credibility of published scholarship. This page outlines expectations, responsibilities, and guidance for reviewers.
Role of Reviewers
Reviewers play a critical role in assessing the scholarly merit, originality, clarity, and significance of submitted manuscripts. Their evaluations support editorial decision-making and help authors improve their work.
Peer Review Model
The journal operates a blind peer review process. Reviewers should ensure that their assessments are fair, unbiased, and based solely on academic merit.
Confidentiality
Manuscripts received for review are confidential documents. Reviewers must not share, discuss, or use the content of a manuscript for personal or professional purposes prior to publication.
Objectivity and Constructive Feedback
Reviews should be:
Objective, respectful, and evidence-based
Focused on the quality of argument, sources, methodology, and contribution to the field
Written in a constructive manner that assists authors in strengthening their work
Personal criticism of the author is inappropriate.
Timeliness
Reviewers are expected to submit their reviews within the agreed timeframe. If a reviewer is unable to complete a review on time, they should inform the editor promptly.
Conflicts of Interest
Reviewers must disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could compromise impartiality, including personal, professional, or financial relationships with the author or subject matter. In such cases, reviewers should decline the review.
Ethical Responsibilities
Reviewers should alert the editors if they identify:
Possible plagiarism or self-plagiarism
Ethical concerns related to research practices
Substantial similarity to previously published work
Significant factual errors or misrepresentation
Such concerns should be communicated confidentially to the editorial office.
Use of AI and Automated Tools
Reviewers should not upload manuscripts to generative AI systems or third-party tools that may compromise confidentiality. Any use of automated tools must respect privacy, data protection, and ethical standards.
