Abstract

The increasing number of languages taught in contemporary educational systems requires a reconsideration of how learners develop their linguistic competences. In Algeria, the introduction of English into primary education is transforming an already multilingual school environment characterized by the coexistence of Arabic, French and, increasingly, English. This development raises a central question: does the simultaneous learning of several languages mainly generate interference and learning difficulties, or can it also contribute to the development of multilingual repertoires, transfer strategies and metalinguistic awareness?

This article offers a theoretical and empirical examination of this issue based on research conducted in 2025-2026 with fifth-grade primary school pupils in Algeria. The study draws on a comparative analysis of twenty French written productions, four classroom observations and a questionnaire administered to thirty French and English teachers. The findings indicate an increase in certain spelling, grammatical, syntactic and lexical errors in productions collected after the introduction of English. Several manifestations of cross-linguistic influence were also identified, including lexical insertions and structural simplifications. At the same time, the data suggest that pupils engage in comparisons between languages and may draw on their multilingual repertoire as a learning resource.

The article therefore argues for a dynamic understanding of multilingual learning. Cross-linguistic influence should not be reduced to negative interference; under appropriate pedagogical conditions, it can become an object of metalinguistic reflection and a didactic resource. The discussion extends these findings to secondary and upper-secondary education, where the challenge is not simply to keep languages separate but to help learners consciously manage their multilingual repertoire.
