The Influence of Yoga on Emotional Balance and Self-Awareness
Main Article Content
Abstract
Emotional balance and self-awareness are important dimensions of psychological well-being because they influence how individuals recognize, understand, and respond to thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and everyday challenges. Yoga is a mind-body practice that commonly combines physical postures, breathing techniques, meditation, relaxation, and mindful attention. This paper examines the influence of yoga on emotional balance and self-awareness, focusing on mindfulness, body awareness, emotional regulation, stress management, self-compassion, psychological well-being, interpersonal awareness, daily practice, and safe integration with professional care. Research suggests that yoga may support psychological well-being and selected positive mental-health outcomes, although findings are not uniform. A meta-analysis of 17 randomized controlled trials among healthy adults found a significant improvement in psychological well-being compared with no active control, but not when yoga was compared with physical activity, and found no significant overall effects on mindfulness or life satisfaction. citeturn0search0 A systematic review of modern postural yoga found improvements in several positive mental-health indicators across many studies, while emphasizing methodological limitations. citeturn0search3 More recent evidence also indicates that yoga can reduce stress and anxiety, although certainty varies. citeturn0search5 The paper argues that yoga can provide a useful framework for developing emotional awareness and self-reflection, but should be viewed as a complementary practice rather than a universal psychological treatment.
