Biophilic Architecture and Its Impact on Psychological Well-Being

Abstract
Biophilic architecture seeks to strengthen the relationship between people and the natural environment through architectural and spatial design. The approach may incorporate daylight, vegetation, natural materials, views of nature, water, natural ventilation, organic forms, and spatial patterns that evoke characteristics of natural environments. This paper examines the impact of biophilic architecture on psychological well-being, with particular attention to stress, anxiety, mood, cognitive restoration, attention, satisfaction, and perceived environmental quality. Research in environmental psychology and building design suggests that exposure to nature and nature-like environments may support stress recovery and psychological restoration. Experimental research has found that natural views and biophilic environments can influence physiological and psychological responses, while systematic reviews report promising associations between biophilic design and health and well-being. However, the evidence base remains heterogeneous, with variation in study settings, interventions, outcome measures, and exposure duration. The paper argues that biophilic architecture should not be reduced to adding indoor plants or decorative natural motifs. Effective biophilic design involves meaningful integration of natural processes, sensory experiences, spatial organization, and environmental conditions. Human-centered implementation should consider climate, culture, accessibility, maintenance, user preferences, and building function. When thoughtfully integrated, biophilic architecture can contribute to healthier, more restorative, and psychologically supportive built environments.
